Upper Primary Year Level Coordinator’s Message

During the first week of Term 3, we celebrated the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week. NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in various fields. Throughout the week, infant primary students created their own NAIDOC poster based around the 2019 NAIDOC themes. Upper primary students produced collaborative artwork, which is now displayed in the art room. Students were engaged in Indigenous games within their physical education lessons as a warm up game and whole class activity. Foundation to Year 4 students learnt Indigenous songs. In week 2, we had a primary assembly acknowledging NAIDOC week. Year 4 students performed the ‘Inanay’ song during assembly. Also lower primary students won prizes for their NAIDOC posters. I thank all teachers and students for their effort and working very hard during NAIDOC Week.

Character Parade and Book Week As part of English week students and teachers dressed up as their favourite book characters. I would like to thank all our teachers, students and parents for supporting the book fair. We had an amazing display in the conference room. Thank you to the literacy committee, Ms Kuyruk and Ms Tran for organising the character parade and book week. Also, as part of the week’s celebrations, author Michael Salmon visited our school and presented his chapter and picture storybooks. Students purchased his books and got them signed. I would like to thank the key learning area committee for organising this amazing workshop!

Gymnastic Program Foundation to Year 3 classes participated in a six week gymnastics program at Gymnastics Unlimited. I saw students developing great skills such as strength, balance, flexibility, determination and teamwork during this program. Thank you Ms Atasay for organising this program.

Numeracy Week A variety of maths competition activities were organised for each year level by their home group teachers. Students who achieved first and second places received special awards from Ms Gocmen.

Fundraising I would like to thank Ms Sahin and Ms Selek for organising a cake stall for the Qurban Campaign, and also thank you to all parents and students for their ongoing support. The money raised went towards the purchase of 52 Qurbans.

Father’s Day Stall Thank you to Ms Yilmaz and Mr Camurtay for organising the wonderful Father’s Day stall.

From the 18th to 20th September, students and teachers of Years 4 to 6 went on a camp to the beautiful Yarra Valley. We’ll have a full report in our next newsletter.

What a busy Term! I would like to thank all teachers, parents and students for their level of support across these various activities.

I wish you all a happy and safe break!

Kind regards,
Ms Esra Yildirim-Bas
